Stainless Steel, 400 Series

Types 409/409HP/409L Type 409/409HP/409L is a ferritic stainless steel containing about 11% chromium and stabilized with titanium. Because of their relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion, the ferritic alloys are particularly attractive for cyclic service at elevated temperatures. It is primarily used in applications such as automotive exhaust systems requiring a combination of corrosion and heat resistance. Type 409L is highly weldable and formable. Types 410/410S Types 410 (UNS S 41000) and 410S (UNS S 41008) are general purpose corrosion and heat resisting chromium stainless steels. They can be hardened by thermal treatment to a wide range of mechanical properties. Type 410S is generally used when weldability is more important than hardenability Types 430/430L Type 430/430L (UNS S 43000) stainless is a corrosion and heat resistant chromium steel, nonhardenable by heat treatment. It has good ductility and excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Its oxidation resistance is superior to Type 304 in intermittent service, but somewhat lower than Type 304 in continuous service. Type 430 is magnetic in all conditions.
